In Mexico, a notario is nothing like a notary public in the US. Beyond holding a law degree, a notario must complete further specialized legal training focused on the duties of the position, and must even compete to earn the title. Notarios are appointed by each state's governor, with the number based on population.

Unlike ordinary attorneys, only notarios have the authority to formalize and record real estate transactions, wills, and other legal instruments. The records they produce remain in their office permanently and belong to the state.

The law also requires notarios to remain impartial in every transaction they handle.
