IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado) is Mexico's value added tax, operating much like a US sales tax. The rate is 16%, applied to every product and service purchased, except food and medicine. It doesn't apply to the real estate transaction itself, but it is tacked onto the fees charged by lawyers, notarios, and real estate agents and agencies for their services.
